In this article , we will learn Simple and easy explanation about hypothesis testing ,when we need this , It’s procedure , type and errors while doing hypothesis testing .

When we need Hypothesis testing

If we need to know any process performing as per specification.
If we made any intervention and we need to check if that intervention improved or worsen the existing situation .

The Hypothesis Testing Procedure

a)Make an assumption about population .The assumption itself is called hypothesis.
b)Decide on a statistic that measure the quantity that the hypothesis is about.
c)Draw a random sample from the population and obtain an estimate using statistic.
d)Based on the estimate , we decide to accept or reject the hypothesis with some confidenc

We can’t evaluate and accept a hypothesis based on one sample.
But we can reject based on one sample. if it fail for one sample it can’t be accept for all other sample.

Type of Hypothesis

Null Hypothesis(H0) – The hypothesis that you start with .the hypothesis that we have by default, or the accepted fact
Alternative Hypothesis (H1) – The hypothesis that you compare your stated hypothesis against. the hypothesis that we want to test.

The null hypothesis as an assumption to be challenged

For Example :
A company quality team wanted to check their packaging process . Milk Package weight 500ml.
Average weight 502ml with a standard deviation of 4ml.

In this case the quality team will make hypothesis.
Null hypothesis Average weight for milk package is 500 ml.
Alternative hypothesis Average weight for milk package is more than 500 ml.

The alternative hypothesis as a research hypothesis:

Suppose a automobile company implemented 6 airbag to increase safety of passengers . Currently they are using only two airbag in their cars.

Now they need some statistical data to prove that 6 airbag implementation will increase the safety of their cars .So, here the research hypothesis will be 6 airbag will increase the safety

Alternative hypothesis : 6 airbag will increase the safety of the cars.
Null hypothesis : 6 airbag will not increase safety of the cars .

Type of errors while doing hypothesis Testing

When performing a Hypothesis Test, two types of errors could occur:

Type-I Error: Reject the Null Hypothesis when it is actually true.
Type-II Error: Accept the Null Hypothesis when it is actually false.
